Gadjo Born

from Nomad by Rom Baro

about

"Gadjo", in the Romani language (language of the gypsies in most parts of the world) is a term used solely for one purpose, to describe the non-Roma (non-gypsy). It is mainly used as a derogatory term, but is also used to simply describe anyone who is not of Rom decent. It is also a light term used for describing someone who is a friend to the Roma and has a similar upbringing and culture, but is not of Roma decent. It is not rare in these modern times for a Rom to marry a Gadjo out of love instead of an arranged marriage (which arranged marriage is very common for young Rom girls). Therefore to "Walk with the Roma, but be Gadjo born" is to be a black sheep amongst the black sheep, but accepted as an equal nonetheless.

lyrics

Gadji Gadjensa? Rom Romensa?
Opre Roma! Me som Yekhipe!

(Gadji with Gadji? Rom with Rom? Rise Gypsies! I am oneness!)

So, between the earth and sky. We live, we die.
Romanipen or not. We use what we got.
Our people are torn and politics is a storm.
I walk with the Roma, but i'm Gadjo born!
